Here is an interesting series of computer depictions of the world map, where the map has been altered in various ways to depict different statistics. In other words, how big would a country be if it were shown based on the number of immigrants, instead of the actual size of the land mass? The one that depicts the size of a country based on net tourism is particularly telling. In other words, taking the number of people who visit a country, minus the number of people who leave the country to visit another. What is shows is that the United States is tiny (meaning relative to population, Americans visit other countries far more than others visit ours). France is extremely large (along with many European countries), meaning more people visit France than the French visit other places. To me, that puts a pretty big hole in the theory that Americans somehow aren't very worldly. If the French are so worldly, then why do they never go anywhere?
The other interesting thing to see is that Africa practically disappears in many of the maps... until you see the one that depicts HIV prevalence, and the number of deaths due to war. South East Asia is very high in that one as well. Then of course, viewing the map according to who has the most nuclear weapons puts things in perspective as well.
