Partisan Politics Really Confuse Me

You know, I'm finding the typical reaction among Republicans regarding the John Edwards affair to be really baffling.  Most of then are attacking Edwards for what he did to his wife during the hardest part of her life as if it were occurring within some kind of bubble of immunity.  I'm speaking of course about John McCain.  His current wife Cindy is not his first, and the story behind his first marriage is actually pretty tragic.

While Republicans are busy about condemning John Edwards for having an affair while his wife was in the hospital fighting cancer, they seem to be ignoring the fact that McCain abandoned his first wife, whom had been loyal to him while he was a prisoner of war, after she was in a terrible car accident which crippled her.

For all the talk Conservatives give to the virtues of family, and the reverence they give to the institution of marriage... they seem to have little problem with John McCain ignoring his vows to stay with his wife through sickness and health til death do they part.  Did he not owe her as much, since she stayed faithful during his imprisonment?  And yet not only did he divorce his first wife, he cheated on her many times before they divorced.

For his part, McCain is staying very quiet about Edwards for he knows better than anyone the adage, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."  Republicans ought to remember that too, as John McCain is running for President, while John Edwards is no longer running for any public office.

Certainly the other untold story is why the media burried this story for so long while Edwards was running for President.  But aside from that... if you condemn John Edwards for what he did to his wife... should you not condemn John McCain as well?  What John Edwards did to his wife is shameful, and makes him a rotten husband, and a person of questionable character.  Likewise, what John McCain did to his first wife makes him a rotten husband, and certainly tarnishes his character which he is banking on so much in his run for the Presidency.

The truth? That was then, this is now. That's basically it. There is a slight difference. While this may not have always been the case, McCain didn't lie with the same amount of grandeur that Edwards did. Don't get me wrong. That doesn't excuse the behavior. But, time has healed the wounds. 30 years is a long time ago. Fact is, the public has a short memory and only cares about what's going on now.

For me, if the libs didn't care about Bill's behavior IN THE WHITEHOUSE, I don't care about McCain's affair.

But, I really don't care about Edward's either. He's going to pay the price one way or another. Lying in the fashion that he has, has just made it worse.

I've come not to expect much from those in politics.

Then I guess this really wasn't written for you Jimi. I'm speaking more towards those who do care about what Edwards did, and yet don't care about what McCain did.

"Certainly the other untold story is why the media burried this story for so long while Edwards was running for President. "

This is why I was pissed.

Though, given my druthers, I wouldn't elect anyone who cheated on their spouses.

(Then again, I'd get rid of government almost entirely, if I could. ;)

I get that. You can't accept one and condemn the other. Hypocrites live on both sides, to be sure.

I didn't know about McCain. The problem is, Obama's politics are much worse. but McCain sounds like a scoundrel, but his politics are less worse than Obama. But Obama sounds like he has more character.

Sigh. How do you choose between two evils?
