To be honest, this gives me the creeps:
George Bush had his three-fingered W salute that supporters flashed when greeting him at presidential campaign events in 2000. And now, if a Los Angeles creative agency gets its way, Sen. Barack Obama will see fans meet him with his own salute like the one above. "Our goal is to see a crowd of 75,000 people at Obama's nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future," says Rick Husong, owner of The Loyalty Inc....We thought, 'Let's try and start a movement where even while walking down the street, people would hold up the O and you would know that they were for Obama,' " says Husong. Much thought went into the relatively simple idea. "You interlace your hands in a circle, the interlacing being a symbol of different types of people coming together and the circle a symbol of unity," he says. Their design, unlike Fairey's, is free, and Husong is urging people to download it and print it on posters and T-shirts. "We want to see it everywhere, but more importantly we want this sign to take the world by storm."
If you follow the original link, you can see a picture of "the salute". I find the whole thing creepy. For one, the fact that a "salute" was created by a company called "Loyalty Inc." for a presidential campaign... well... does that not bother anyone? The poster imagery frankly does harken back to the type of graphics that you might see in... oh... I don't know... the 1930's... if you catch my drift. "Take the world by storm"? Is Obama running for President of the United States or Emperor of the World?
Now then, I will be clear... I am not suggesting that the Obama movement is anyway related to the Nazi movement in either thought, nor deed. But I do find it troubling that we are inventing specific salutes for people who are seeking the highest office in our land. The danger is that people will feel loyalty to the man and not to the office, or the people whom he is supposed to serve... the citizenry. The danger is that people will feel that the person can do whatever he wants, despite any Constitutional shackles that are supposed to be in place.
Obama would not be the first to fall into the trap. George W. Bush is renowned for this, and it has caused his presidency to mired in corruption, misplaced loyalty, and a sense of entitlement that we have not seen for some time. People have been willing to grant new powers to the office of the presidency (often through laws passed after the fact), as if those powers would die with the person when he left office. Maybe that explains why Obama voted to pass FISA after so many Democrats used illegal wire tapping to gain political leverage against Bush. Obama knew he had a great chance to be President, and wants that power for himself too.
I once heard a comment during an inauguration that people don't appreciate how much of an amazing event that is. Very few countries experience a peaceful exchange of leadership, where the old leader is even on hand to witness it. Americans salute, and even pledge allegiance, to their flag... the symbol of our country. Those who take any office either in government, or in the military, pledge to defend the constitution. These are the things that Americans should salute.
So before you get excited for your new way to express your devotion to your candidate of choice, think about who you are saluting, how, and for what reasons.
