<< I Am Not "The Media" Troubling Milwaukee SWAT Raid >>
Please Choose Exactly One

Would you rather have:

  1. Cheap Gas
  2. Independence from "foreign oil"

These are mutually exclusive options, both in reality, and in the context of this post.  Anyone who attempts to sell you a plan that will give you both can immediately be dismissed as either a liar, a panderer, or a politician (which by definition includes the other two).

I'll take Option #1 please.

3. Cheap and abundant alternative fuels and vehicles that can use them.

So Jay... what grade do you normally give students when they fail to follow instructions on a test?

I'll take #2. I'd rather have the money stay on this side of the pond than go to terrorist supporting countries or nutjobs like Hugo Chavez. (I suppose it also helps that I have a vehicle that gets 40-50 mpg though.)

Plus, the more expensive fuel gets, the more incentive capitalists have to make Jay's dream above a reality.

You hit the nail right on the head BJ... and that is why I give Jay an F for his answer. In order to get #3 (which is a specialized case of #2), you HAVE TO have expensive gas.

I'll take all of the above:

I want a pony and an ice cream cone, and they have to be at the same time. I don't want anything to change. I want it to be summer all the time, and no school! Certainly I should vote for anyone who promises me all these things! And I want to be safe and warm, too.

# 1 is a false option. Cheap gas as defined by the price 5 years ago is likely extinct in the near term no matter what we do.

Give me door #2, Nick. Door #1 is closed forever (if cheap gas=say, $1.50/gal.)

Nick, I don't give multiple-choice tests, and I especially would never offer such an awful false dichotomy as your question here does.
Thursday, August 07, 2008 7:58:11 PM (Central Daylight Time, UTC-05:00)
I actually agree with Jay. I hate to pull a Clinton but it certainly does depend on what "cheap" means.
Thursday, August 07, 2008 8:18:23 PM (Central Daylight Time, UTC-05:00)
How would you define cheap gas Nick?

I would qualify cheap as a low price 5 years ago... about a buck fifty. There is nothing anyone can do to get us back to that price.

I'll take option 2, and let it lead to option 3.
