In reference to my post yesterday about voting, I received an email from someone who had never voted before, wasn't necessarily interested in politics per se, but wanted to know where to get information about each of the candidates in an effort to make an informed decision. So where do you go to get information if you're not all that interested in politics, want to make an informed decision, and didn't want to watch a bunch of really long debates (which this person wasn't interested in doing). My first suggestion was to visit the official website for each of the candidates: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, Mike Huckabee and my favorite, Ron Paul. Each of the candidates will have a section where they describe their positions on all the major issues from their own viewpoint.
The next stop should be a neutral website, which compares the candidates based on their voting histories and states positions in speeches. One invaluable resource is Project Vote Smart. Also, since each of the major candidates (except Huckabee) is currently serving in Congress, another great resource is Gov Track. This site has information about all members of Congress, and all bills that have ever been proposed in Congress. You can look up voting histories, bills that people have sponsored, and for each bill, you can track all action that has ever occurred on it, including committee votes.
One site that I neglected to put in my email response that I just thought of, if you really want to dig into the candidates, is Open Secrets. This project compiles all of the FEC records for the candidates so you can see who is donating to which campaigns.
What other sites provide good information comparing candidates that could help an uninformed voter become informed?
