Back in my first year of blogging, I wrote a post reminiscing about the Oleo wars. Of course, when I say reminiscing, I'm referring to other people's stories mostly because I'm not an old codger. But, it seems like another state is looking to ban trans fat, which would essentially bring back the Oleo wars, but for different reasons. Soon I could have my own stories to tell the grandchildren about making a run for the border with a trunk full of margarine. Maryland is looking to ban the use in restaurants, but if the current smoking ban escalations are any clue, it will soon result in a ban of margarine in general. Washington State wants to ban smoking in cars with children in them, which will obviously next lead to banning smoking in homes with children. After all, kids are exposed to smoking in the home much more often than in a car.
So if trans fats are so dangerous that we can't allow restaurants to serve them, then the next step will be to ban the sale of margarine and other foods containing trans fats to children and outlaw its use in homes with children. After that, you might as well just ban it outright.
You know... for the kids.
