The Danger of Real ID

Real ID (AKA Sensenbrenner's Boondoggle) won't just cost billions of dollars, and not improve our safety from terrorist one iota, but it will also make you more vulnerable to run of the mill criminals, as explained in this Ars Tecnica article.  The State of Wisconsin can't even keep your social security number safe (having sent them out in one form or another three times in the last year), and yet we're supposed to trust that even more sensitive information will be safe when all 50 states start sharing data together, and with the federal government?  We're not just talking about names, addresses and social security numbers.  We're talking about police records, possibly credit histories (because you know the FDIC will get in on this), and Lord knows what else.

That is one sweet, and irresistible, honey pot for any hacker.  And make no mistake about it.  These systems will be hacked.  This is not simply a prediction.  It is a guarantee.  And of course, we're not just talking about identity theft.  With this sort of information, other kinds of crime from blackmail to fraud could be easily committed, as well as making other crimes (like stalking) easier.

This needs to end now, before it's too late and we're all made to suffer.

Nick,

You don't understand as identity theft goes up (only possible with a centralized ID, BTW), and as the information leaks out, the problem will be diagnosed as the ID's are not real enough.

This will lead to the passage REALLY REAL ID which will include biometric data, a DNA swab, and an implanted RFID chip.

Problem - Reaction - Solution

Problem: Government sponsored ID thefts rise with the centralization of ID
Reaction: Citzens fear ID theft adn the personal finacial chaos it causes
Solution: Restrict citizen liberties with even more extensive and more centralized government ID

It is nothing short of a National ID Card. I find myself siding with the likes of
ACLU,
World Socialist Web Site,
Conspiracy Planet, and even
People For the American Way, though not for the same reasons. This is definitely something I do not want. What’s so ironic, is we are debating if we should require an ID to vote in Wisconsin. Am I barking up the wrong tree?
