I say this, because starting tomorrow, the tax on cigarettes is going up $1 a pack, while the tax on cigars is not going up at all. Cigarettes are defined by Wisconsin law as "any roll of tobacco which is wrapped in paper or any substance other than tobacco" [sec. 139.30(1), Wis. Stats.]. This is convenient for cigar smokers like myself since cigars are wrapped in tobacco. And according to the Smoke Free Wisconsin blog:
Unfortunately, cigars were afforded special treatment in the budget. The budget specifies that no cigar can be taxed more than 50ยข.
So no matter how expensive of a cigar you smoke, it will still only cost you 50 cents in tax. That seems to make it plain that legislators don't care a damn about trying to stop anyone from smoking... they just care about stopping other people from smoking. If you're not willing to harm yourself through the law, then you shouldn't be willing to harm others.
I want a list of all cigar smoking legislators who voted for the cigarette tax hike... to call them out for their hypocrisy. The stupidity of asking this however is that it is more likely to result in an increased cigar tax, rather than a decreased cigarette tax. So never mind... I don't want the list. But you know who you are. You're arrogant, self righteous, and elitist.
