Make no mistake about it. George W. Bush is now a Democrat... though I'm not sure he was ever a Republican. It's pretty clear from the set of bills that he has signed into law now that he will do anything it takes to secure his legacy through Iraq. It should not be viewed as a coincidence that these two bills emerged from Congress at almost the same time, with shockingly little political argument, and will both be signed. The first is a new Iraq War spending bill:
The Democratic-controlled House is expected to give President Bush an end-of-session victory in his yearlong battle with anti-war lawmakers over Iraq by approving $70 billion for U.S. military operations there and in Afghanistan. The vote Wednesday also would represent the final step in sealing a deal between Democrats and Bush over how much money to provide domestic agencies whose budgets are set each year by Congress. The Iraq funds have been bundled with an omnibus appropriations measure to create a massive $555 billion package that Bush has signaled he will sign.Providing the war funds was a bitter pill for most Democrats, who on Monday sent the Senate a bill limited to $31 billion for U.S. operations in Afghanistan, which have much broader support than the unpopular mission in Iraq.
And of course this morning we now have news of a new energy bill:
Congress by a wide margin approved the first increase in automobile fuel economy in 32 years Tuesday, and President Bush plans to quickly sign the legislation, accepting the mandates on the auto industry....In a dramatic shift to spur increased demand for nonfossil fuels, the bill also requires a six-fold increase in ethanol use to 36 billion gallons a year by 2022, a boon to farmers. And it requires new energy efficiency standards for an array of appliances, lighting and commercial and government buildings.
Kiss your incandescent light bulbs goodbye... they'll soon be illegal. And kiss low food prices goodbye, and say hello to more starving people in Africa thanks to the politicians homicidally dangerous obsession with ethanol. This is the sort of bill that no Republican worth his salt would ever sign. And yet Bush has said that he will sign it? Why? To get his Iraq money. That is all George W. Bush cares about. He will swallow any pill, sign any bill, and do whatever it takes. 20 years from now, Bush knows that history will only judge him on Iraq, and so he will do whatever it takes, even sell his soul to the Democrats for to secure that legacy.
Every time you see Bush sign a bill or propose an idea that you never thought he'd sign (like sub-prime loan bailouts), think Iraq.
