Senator Kit Bond, who is the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Meeting said this on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer last night:
GWEN IFILL: I just would like to -- but do you think that waterboarding, as I described it, constitutes torture?SEN. KIT BOND: There are different ways of doing it. It's like swimming, freestyle, backstroke. The waterboarding could be used almost to define some of the techniques that our trainees are put through, but that's beside the point. It's not being used.
Like swimming? Huh? What does he think waterboarding is? Is he confusing it with one of these? That's a kick board Senator, not a waterboard. I've debate the merits of torture on this blog many times, and whether it is something that we want to do as a matter of policy. Plenty of people also debate whether waterboarding actually constitutes torture or not. Most recently, the head of the CIA team which captured Abu Zubaydah called waterboarding torture. His thoughts on the subject are worth reading, no matter what your views on the subject, since he has firsthand knowledge of the techniques and the results.
But no matter where you fall on the subject, simply dismissing the debate on waterboarding by calling it swimming is insulting, and defiles the democratic process. That, and it makes you look like a moron, because I seriously wonder whether you actually think waterboarding is the same as using a kick board in a pool.
