The mayor of Palm Bay Florida wants to ban the sale of all Chinese products in his city:
Mayor John Mazziotti is so concerned about the recent spate of recalls that he wants to ban officials in Palm Bay, Fla., from buying Chinese products. "It's something that needs to be done," he tells CNN this morning. "It gets worse all the time."The issue has been dominating the news of late. We've written about recalls involving everything from toys to fish. Yesterday, China announced that 774 people have been charged with making or selling tainted or counterfeit products. And later today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to announce her party's plan to improve product safety. If that doesn't work, there's always Mazziotti's approach, which would cut out any products that are stamped "Made in China." Here's an excerpt from the minutes of a recent city meeting, during which the council decided to put off voting on the measure until the end of December:Ordinance No. 2007-97, amending the Code of Ordinances, Administration, Chapter 35, Finance Department, by prohibiting the purchase of products manufactured in China or with components made in China. ...
Apparently the mayor hasn't thought this completely through. I wonder when he'll have his moment of clarity, and realize that banning all products made in China, or with components in China will effectively ban the sale of everything. What will the people of Palm Bay Florida wear? Where will they get electronics products? Talk about dooming a city to destruction.
