Required Movie Knowledge

So while at work, I happened to jokingly toss out this quote:

Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.

And one of my coworkers didn't know know what movie that was from.  I said it was from The Princess Bride, and he admitted that he's never seen it.  This led to an interesting discussion as we discovered there were several he hadn't seen which surprised us.  I think there are some "chick flicks" that guys just have to know, as part of required dating knowledge.  You don't have to love these movies, or really even enjoy them (but sometimes you do end up really enjoying them), but you at least need a basic working knowledge of them.  Here is a partial list that I've come up with of movies that guys really need to know about:

Of course this list is probably generational too.  But I'm curious... what movies do all of you think needs to be on this list?

Without a doubt, "Somewhere In Time", with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

I think Pete is trying to make us ill. Talk about a chick flick.
No, the essentials for men: Caddyshack, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Stripes

The Princess Bride is NOT a chick flick.

It was written by the same guy who wrote Marathon Man and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for God's sake!

James... I think you're missing the point. This is a list of movies that women enjoy, that guys should all know. BTW, Stripes is one of my personal favorites, but I never really enjoyed Caddyshack.

Elliot... when I said "but sometimes you do end up really enjoying them", I was referring to The Princess Bride. That's an all time favorite of mine as well... and you're right... it might not qualify as a chick flick, but its definitely required dating knowledge.

Good lord.....did someone not read the post?

Another fine movie would be "The Notebook"....

I would have to agree with Pete on "The Notebook"...

I personally hated it, but it does help your cause if you've seen it.

Somewhere in Time... which I've also seen, probably filled the same role 10-15 years ago.

Two other films that might fit this genre are "Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School", starring Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tormei, Mary Steenburgen and John Goodman (in a pretty darn good performance). Also a pretty good date movie would be "The Lake House", tho that one you'd probably have to see twice just to figure the timelines out :)

I did think it was good tho....actually anything with Sandra Bullock in it is A-OK with me :)

You're all wrong. The only two words you EVAH need to know when it comes to Chick Flicks are as follows:

Dirty

Dancing

Best "chick flick" - from a female perspective:

While you were Sleeping. I watch it every time I find it channel surfing

Honorable mention - Hope Floats

Yeah but Phel....that's a movie I'd have to be dragged to...not a movie I'd enjoy too....sorry....

rc...I DO agree with you on "While You Were Sleeping" tho....

Maybe so.

But still true

I was just speaking in the context of Nick's original post...of a guy who may wind up liking a movie shared by two people on a date and speaking totally from the male vantage point...I just don't see myself ever developing a taste for "Dirty Dancing"....but that's just me.

The movies I have mentioned before have all been movies I have thoroughly enjoyed and shared with my gal....

Monday, October 15, 2007 10:02:37 PM (Central Daylight Time, UTC-05:00)
Of course... Dirty Dancing... how could I have forgotten that one? As for the "context" of my original post... I didn't say I particularly liked all the ones I listed. For instance, I'm not a fan of Say Anything, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't know it as a guy.

As for anything with Sandra Bullock... no... hell no. Ugh.

I guess I must be really strange. My all time favorite movie is Taming of the Shrew. Can
Shakespeare be considered in the 'chick flick that must be seen by males?

"Ghost" is an insufferable chick flick. So is "Dirty Dancing".
Tuesday, October 16, 2007 2:56:56 PM (Central Daylight Time, UTC-05:00)
Oh common Nick....you don't like Brunettes? :)

Actually, I didn't care for the stupid comedies where she faked playing an FBI
agent in pageants........but I've liked her other material....

Bridget Jones' Diary

As far as I can recall, we only went to a couple of movies while we were dating. One was Young Frankenstein, which was a huge disappointment because we'd been told we should tape our ribs because we would laugh so much. The other was Yellow Submarine, which she enjoyed immensely in that she was bout as high on cannabis as I ever got her.

Since we've been married? Closest thing to a chick flick we've gone to see was the last movie we went to the theater for, Sixth Sense,

"but I never really enjoyed Caddyshack."...blasphemer.
Thursday, October 18, 2007 2:59:07 PM (Central Daylight Time, UTC-05:00)
Oops. I missed the point. But is "Say Anything" a chick flick movie? I think anything with John Cusack is immediately disqualified as a chick flick.

C'mon, the whole speech about kick boxing (the most quotable part of the movie) and the party scene are not translatable to women. They don't understand it any more than explaining to them the balk rule (and lord knows I've tried).

And I stick by my point about "Somewhere in Time." I think it's one of those movies that not understanding it or being able to quote from it has the same effect as wearing Old Spice - and I'll just leave it at that.

I don't see The English Patient on the list. And in honor of Deborah Kerr, we have to mention "An Affair to Remember". Finally, any of the Nora Ephron movies are required viewing.

Sorry, they just are.
