<< The Heat and The Smells and The Sounds Note To Self >>
You're Not Who You Say You Are

Pretty much my entire family is very politically aware, and has very strong feelings on almost everything.  This makes coming out here rather interesting because my core beliefs are generally very different from theirs, and they need to talk about this, so that my ways can be corrected before it's too late.  So a couple nights ago, I ended up discussing politics with my brother-in-law Shannon until 2:30 AM.  For those keeping track, my body, which hasn't fully adjusted to the time difference, was under the impression it was about 3:30 AM.  Normally I'd say that discussing politics with someone in that condition is like trying to have a bar fight with someone who is falling down drunk, but somehow I managed to keep it together... mostly.

The next morning, I was afraid the conversation was going to continue when the following conversation occurred instead:

Shannon:  You know Nick, I was thinking about it last night, and I don't think you're a libertarian.
Me:  Uhhh, yes I am.
Shannon:  Actually no you're not.  You're an anarchist.
Me:  Well then I hate to break it to you Shannon, but you're not a Republican.  You're a progressive authoritarian.
Shannon:  Ummm, no I'm not.

Actually the funniest part of the whole night was when he kept calling himself a Republican.  That cracks me up every time he says it.  Well, he might be Republican for California.

I will say this; if you two were to meet in a "Republican" primary, the RNC and the state party apparatus would be throwing all of its weight behind Shannon.

Reminds me of a conversation I had a few years ago with a Brit friend of mine who said he was a Tory (Conservative).

Me: Jimmy, you support gun control (i.e. no guns other than registered hunting firearms, including the Bobbies), socialized medicine, a regressive tax system and more government in your life than just about any American, including me could support. To me, you're a big-time lefty.

Jimmy: Against all that, are you?

Me: Yes

Jimmy: You're just a frustrated cowboy idealist. (???)

We quickly switched the subject to the merits of baseball vs. cricket.
