Uneasy About Fred

So the news is coming through the grapevine that Fred Thompson is going to officially announce... for real this time... unlike last time he was going to officially announce but didn't.  In generally I'm pretty disappointed with the Republican field as a whole, and don't find the Democratic field any better.  I still like Ron Paul, but I'm just not sure he's building enough traction.  It is still early, so the game is wide open, but that's not the real point of the post.

I have an uneasy feeling about Fred Thompson.  It's hard to put my finger on it exactly, but something about his run just doesn't seem right to me.  It's more of a gut thing than anything I can link to in something specific he's said... but the thing is... I listen to my gut.  I think it started because before Fred Thompson was even a serious "I'm not running candidate", he was getting way too much press, and way too many people were excited by him.  He had hardly said anything, and people were already begging him to run for President.  Why?  What did he do to earn that, besides play a part in Law & Order, and talk about how the Russians don't take a dump without a plan?

His time in the Senate?  I'm not sure it was all that memorable... and honestly... what Senator really has that distinguished of a career?  Next thing you know, Democrats will be touting Hillary Clinton's, or John Edwards' time in the Senate as distinguished and making them deserving of the Oval Office.  In fact, the most undistinguished part of his Senate record is his support for the McCain-Feingold Act.  I have publicly said I would never vote for John McCain because of that bill... so how could I support Fred Thompson for voting for the same?

But the truth is that all those things are my brain trying to figure out why my gut doesn't like Fred Thompson.

I don't know enough about him, yet, so I'm reserving judgement.

But, my gut says the Republican's don't have a chance in hell anyway.

Bush's real legacy will be a Federal government run by the Democrats for at least the next eight years.

Because, Nick, beyond the substantive reasons, as you do, I also listen to my gut...and my gut tells me to vote for Fred.

Could it be all of the static for the last decade or so tellng every one that Hollywood types should be seen and not heard?

Actually grumps, I think part of it is that he is a Hollywood actor. When I hear him speak, it automatically brings up the feeling that he is acting, and not speaking his real mind. Like I said, it's a gut thing. Sometimes you just feel glad handed... and Fred's speeches feel like the verbal equivalent of glad handing.

Of course George Bush's inability to give a prepared speech bothers me just as much. I can't listen to him give a televised speech, though he is significantly better when speaking extemporaneously.

I'm not set in stone by any measure on this. Right now, I'm just talking about what my gut says... and my gut says something isn't quite right. It's the same feeling many Democrats have with Obama, or a lot of Republicans had with Powell when there were rumors of him running. It's all flash and no substance.

I'm waiting for real substance from Fred Thompson.

I'm in the mood to not settle. I don't want to settle on McCain cause he could beat Hillary. I don't want to settle on Mitt cause he's more conservative than John Edwards.

I shouldnt' have to settle. It's the presidency. I should be able to choose someone conservative or libertarian that isn't personally flawed, wants to shrink the size of government, is a good speaker, and has good ideas for the future of the country.

I don't feel like I'm settling by choosing Ron Paul.

Fred Thommy is going to have a hard time explaining why he was a lobbyist for some planned parenthood outfit, I forget the name. Also the CFR,and lastly, he has not one Nano-second in the military!!!! It is bad to have a President with no military experience,,IMHO

Fred! Isn't really going to have much problem as to explanations. That is why I'm worried.

He has a major player in his camp--a guy that I really have a bad feeling about. . .

Spencer Abraham. Sorry I couldn't remember the name and had to look it up.
This isn't any kind of "talking point" (or disguised racism.) I've read some stuff written about him that just isn't good. Maybe the stuff I read was a blackwashing, I don't know. That is something which you have to decide yourself.

I don't want that guy back in a position of major influence again--although from the looks of it, the guy is still very heavily connected and influencial even though he no longer officially is so.

This extension of the primaries doesn't really seem to have the effect of giving us better information of the candidates. It seems more a way to totally destroy any interest in who will be elected at all. I've grown terribly weary and have to struggle to pay attention anymore. I'm growing more suspicious and more uncomfortable every day.
