What is the Male Equivalent of Miss?

Women often get upset (for good reason) when they are first called "ma'am" after being called "miss" for a long time.  It's an unwelcome sign of aging.  For me, I'm still taken aback when people call me sir.  But that got me to thinking... what is the male equivalent of "miss"?  What was I called before people started saying "sir" to me?  Hey you?  Bozo?  I can't say I ever recall being called "mister".  I don't look that distinguished yet do I?

Aw, man, Robert totally beat me to the "dude."

I think those lines are pretty blurred now, however, because I'm usually called "ma'am" and not, er, old enough to care.

Easy: Son. As in when a police officer pulls you over and says "Son, do you know how fast you were going?"

Seriously, the answer is Master, usually preceded by the word young, i.e. young Master Nick.

Imagine the poor kid who was known as Bater.

I love using "sir". I think it's great.

The formality and basic respect of "sir" is really missing from our
society...
