Here is one guy who won't bother walking next time:
A 21-year-old Wauwatosa man was arrested for drunken driving in Brookfield last week after he stopped his vehicle and started walking home because he said he was too drunk to drive.According to Brookfield police:An officer saw the man turn off of Lilly Road onto North Avenue at a high rate of speed before pulling over on Tru Lane and parking his vehicle. The man staggered as he left the vehicle, and police approached him as he was walking. The man told officers he realized he was too drunk to drive and was going to walk home. Police administered field sobriety tests, which the man failed.
Now granted he shouldn't have been driving in the first place. But he actually realized this somehow in his drunken condition, and started to walk home. This is a good thing. But in their zeal to be tough on drunk driving, the decided to arrest him after he made the correct decision. Now I'm sure some people would say that this will ensure that next time he doesn't bother driving at all. However, the pessimist in me says that next time he'll try to drive all the way home and risk it.
There have also been cases where officers have arrested people for drunk driving while they were sleeping it off in their car after the bar closed. Isn't the goal to make the streets safer, not increase arrests?
