This actually caught me by surprise. It's an editorial talking about the UW school system compared to Arkansas, written by a professor at UW Eau Claire:
The editorial also brings up the usual statistic that Wisconsin tax levels rank eighth in the nation. Well, Arkansas ranks 45th with a really low property tax. So what is the difference between Wisconsin and Arkansas? Wisconsin has great schools, fabulous roads and campgrounds with clean toilets. And something else. While recently in Arkansas, I bought a 92-cent soda at a convenience store and gave the clerk a dollar and two cents. The clerk stared and stared and could not figure out the dime change. This is much less likely to occur in Wisconsin, but if we try hard enough we can also become like Arkansas or Mississippi....I don't know about you, but I want to retain Wisconsin's traditions and identity instead of our becoming the first Northern state to become like a Southern state. For those who are interested, go visit the South some time.
What a stupid ignorant hick! And I'm not talking about the cashier in Arkansas... I'm talking about the professor. It's sad too, because when I saw the title of the editorial, "We can emulate Arkansas, if that's what we want to do", I actually thought to myself... he isn't going to pull out some stereotype about how Southerners are all stupid is he? But that's exactly where he went.
He thinks that southerners are all stupid, don't wear shoes, marry their cousins, and chew tobacco too... and he teaches his students this. It's saddening that such ignorant people who are prejudiced get to teach. For the record, there have been plenty of times when I've had a cashier who couldn't make change without their cash register telling them exactly how to do it... right here in Wisconsin. If the cashier could make change without a cash register telling him how... odds are he wouldn't need to work at a convenience store.
