Why Do Women Do That?

Someone brought in bagels to work this morning.  I happened to stop by the kitchen, and there were just a few left, along with the requisite 1/16 of a bagel sitting there.  You know it happens in every office.  A woman decides she doesn't want the whole thing, so she cuts one in half.  Fine.  Half a bagel is perfectly acceptable.  But then another woman comes in, and decides she doesn't want the whole half, so she cuts the half in half.  Why?  And for God's sake... why would a woman choose to take a half of a half, and cut that in half and leave the rest?!  By now it's just a bagel-bite, that nobody else is going to take.  Do you really think 1/16 of a bagel is going to make you fat?

But someone consciously chose to cut 1/8 of a bagel in half. If you don't want to just finish off the 1/16th sitting there, then more power to you. Hell... even I didn't take the 1/16th laying there. But if there is an 1/8th of a bagel sitting there, you are suggesting that cutting it in half is better than just taking the whole thing? Hell.. just eat half and throw the rest out at you desk!

This topic reminds me of some questions that I have:

Why do men put nearly empty cereal boxes back in the cabinet, even though there's no where near a serving size left?

Why do men wait until the wastebasket is overflowing before they take out the trash?

Why do men leave wet towels on the bathroom floor?

Why do men put off Christmas shopping until 4:00 pm on Christmas Eve?

Are these conscious decisions or innate behaviors?

On the bagel issue, I agree with you that the half of a half of a half of a half thing is goofy.

To answer your questions specifically Mary...

Q: Why do men put nearly empty cereal boxes back in the cabinet, even though there's no where near a serving size left?
A: Because we understand the innate behavior of women to want 1/16th of a bagel, therefore we figure you'd also be willing to eat less than a single serving of cereal.

Q: Why do men wait until the wastebasket is overflowing before they take out the trash?
A: Because you forgot to take out the trash before it got to the overflowing state.

Q: Why do men leave wet towels on the bathroom floor?
A: You got me on this one. I hang up my towels to dry.

Q: Why do men put off Christmas shopping until 4:00 pm on Christmas Eve?
A: Because contrary to popular belief, the crowds aren't that bad at that point, and you get amazing deals. I'd think as a woman you'd appreciate a good sale. Men also aren't all caught up in the consumer driven nature of Christmas like women are.

How's that? ;)

Having 6 older sisters, I happen to know the real reason. It
is not because they want only half; they probably want it all.
It is because it would be rude to take the last of it; they are
leaving some for someone else.

That's an interesting theory... and I'd go along with it if there were no other bagels left. But there were at least 3 whole bagels in the kitchen along with the "bagel-bite".

BTW... I have 3 older sisters... and I can assure you that none of them would have thought twice about just eating the last one.

Nick,

You should be commended for hanging up your wet towels and appreciating a good bargain, although you probably wouldn't have the luxury of waiting until the last minute to Christmas shop if you were busy cleaning the house and cooking and preparing for guests to arrive shortly.

But don't tell me that I forgot to take out the trash.

That is NOT how the division of labor works in my house. :)
