What Are You Suggesting?

I'm not sure I get this post from Charlie Sykes, when he quotes Mark Steyn:

The same people who say that government is a mighty power for good that can extinguish every cigarette butt and detoxify every cheeseburger and even change the very climate of the planet back to some Edenic state so that the water that falleth from heaven will land as ice and snow, and polar bears on distant continents will frolic as they did in days of yore, the very same people say: Building a border fence? Enforcing deportation orders? Can't be done, old boy. Pie-in-the-sky.

Because if I understand Charlie's positions correctly, he's for the border fence, and against nanny statism.  So if he finds this so amusing (which he apparently does), that means one of his two views must be wrong.  Either he has to admit that the nanny state must be workable, or the border fence is not.

Luckily for me... as a libertarian in good standing... I think neither are possible, which makes Steyn's quote quite amusing for me, without any internal conflict.

The Sykester is irony-proof unfortunately.

Charlie's pointing out the irony of the liberals who think government should be omnipotent.

Oh, and I suggest you read Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution before claiming that no borders is a small-"l" libertarian position.

I've never suggested that the government doesn't have the authority to build a fence. I have suggested... in fact I know... that the government is not capable of doing so successfully. Hell, years have proven the government is not competent enough to do much of anything well. Charlie's quote there seems to suggest that people who believe the nanny state is feasible also must admit that building a successful border fence is feasible. But if that's true, then this particular quotation also suggests that the opposite is true.

I think deep down Charlie would never agree that a government operated nanny state is feasible. Neither do I. And because of that, I also readily admit to believing that a successful border fence is not feasible either.

Ah; there's the error in your logic. It takes a higher level of competence to run a nanny state than it does to protect one's territorial integrity.

For the record, a fence alone without the manpower or the will to respond to incursions is worse than worthless, and that's what the pols in the swamp are suggesting we do.

So according to you... the politicians aren't going to do what it will really take and yet will continue with a costly fence operation that they know won't work. Where's this competence you speak of?

Did I say the morons in DC are competent enough to keep this country? Don't believe I did.

The fence-that-won't-be-backed-up (as opposed to one that would be backed up; the one I want) is meant as a sucker-punch to those of us who believe that America's borders are worth defending by those on both sides of the aisle that don't believe that, with the side "benefit" of wasting billions of dollars as post-1929 politicians are predisposed to do. The goals of the amnesty bill are to give the Dems millions of new voters (the Dem goal) and refill the suddenly-drained cheap illegal-alien labor pool (the business-community goal) while conning conservatives into believing said pool won't get refilled (the Pubbie goal).

Which is my point exactly! The government is not competent to do it correctly, so it will end up being a total waste of money that will have 0 net result. And yet, people are still pushing for that stupid wall... just to make a point... or something.
