A Tale of Two Bridges... and Other Pictures

One of the major construction projects that's gone on in Wauwatosa in the last couple of years has been centered around Hart Park as part of an MMSD flood plain project.  They cut down countless trees, and reworked a large portion of the banks of the Menomonee River.  It seems some changes were also made to the 68th Street bridge over the river:

Just a couple blocks away is the 70th Street Bridge, which was largely unaffected by all the construction, even though 70th Street itself was completely rebuilt:

I can see that with whatever they did to the 68th Street bridge, they tried to keep the old look and feel that the 70th Street bridge still has, but it's a total failure.  The lines on the new stone work are too clean.  There is too much poured concrete, and the metal railings are an awful idea.  I'm sure it all had to be done in order to keep up with code, but you can't tell me that those metal railings realistically make the bridge any more safe than those old cut stone ones.

Normally I have an appreciation for that mix of old and new, but somehow this new bridge just doesn't pull it off.  The aesthetic appeal is completely lost.  You can see the rest of the pictures I took of the Menomonee River in this Flickr set.

And if you need even more of a rustic building fix, you should also check out my set on Flickr which has some old broken down Sheboygan farm houses.  Here is a sample:

My Dad was a bridge contractor, and he replaced many of those beautiful bridges with uglier replacements. We have photo album after photo album of those old bridges. It's his version of artwork. He wanted the new bridges to match the old bridges, too, but like you mentioned, money and building codes prevented that.

He's been known to mess with the "too neat" stone template. I know that on at least one of those bridges, he ditched the template and did his own thing. It's gorgeous.

I bet those pictures are fantastic Wendy. I have a thing for old bridges myself.

Interesting to see your photos. I saw the plans for the 68th Street Bridge two or so years ago at the time, I expressed concern about the 'solid' nature of the bridge walls. I always enjoyed seeign the river when I drove, rode, or walked over the old bridge. Can't do that any more. I was told that the bridge walls were, themselves, part of the flood control function of the project. The upstream edge of the bridge is supposed to function as part of the levy, to help hold floodwaters back from downstream, if I understand it correctly.

The other thing that I can't help but notice is how deteriorated the sidwalk is. Especially next to all the 'clean' new bridge, the sidewalk is a shambles.
