I have a Far Side calendar on my desk at work. This morning I tore off yesterday's cartoon, and saw that today was May Day. This gave me pause. Normally, when the calendar lists holiday's for other countries (which it often times does), it lists those countries out next to the holiday (Boxing Day comes to mind as an example). They didn't do that for May Day. May Day is not an American holiday.
I understand that May Day has many different connotations depending on where you live. For me, May Day immediately brings to mind the Soviet Union, which marked May Day with military parades through Red Square. Today in the United States, May Day has been co-opted by many immigrant groups to protest some immigration bills, and is sometimes referred to as "Mexican Labor Day". It is also being pushed as "International Worker's Day", probably in an effort to foster memories of the good times everyone had when the Soviet Union celebrated this day. Cause as you know... we all miss communism so much.
Interestingly enough, I looked ahead 4 days to May 5th, and didn't see anything saying that it was Cinco de Mayo, which at least is a recognized holiday in Mexico. This is one screwed up calendar.
