Few people know much Latin.  And for the rest of us, there are probably only one or two phrases we're familiar with.  Most people know "carpe diem", which translates to "seize the day".  It is one of my favorites (not that this is unusual).  Another of my other favorites is "quo vadimus", which translates to "where are we going?"  To me it is the perfect book end partner to carpe diem.

Where carpe diem is all about living in the present, quo vadimus encourages you to consider the future.  Both are equally important.  For as often as you may attempt to live each day to the fullest, you may still end up going nowhere in the end.  It is important to stop and consider what you're doing, and whether it is taking you where you actually want to be.  But many people don't actually know where they want to go.  Each day ends up being a step in a direction, but instead of a thought out direction, it's a random one.  Take enough random steps, and odds are that you'll end up back where you started.

When you realize that's happened to you, and things get bad, that's the time to stop and ask yourself... Where am I going?  Sometimes it's difficult to ask, because your answer may be that you're going somewhere you don't want to go.  That's ok... because now you know.  After all, in order navigate a course, not only do you need to know your destination, but you need to know where you are.

So take the time to ask yourself where you are going, and then seize every opportunity to get yourself there.  Seizing the day alone is not enough.
