We Enforce The Law, Not Follow It

I know... the gall to actually think that police should obey the law:

Dallas police and firefighters will soon have to pay up if they run afoul of the city's red-light cameras.

Starting Sunday, any Dallas police officer in a marked squad car who is captured on the city's cameras running a red light will have to pay the $75 fine if the incident doesn't comply with state law.

Firefighters who run red lights will have to pay if they're not on an emergency run.

Many police officers are angry about the proposed policy. The prevailing belief among officers has been that they can run red lights as they see fit.
...
So far, the Dallas Police Department has received notice of 103 marked vehicles and six unmarked vehicles running red lights, said Lt. Sally Lannom, who helped draft the new policy.

It should be pretty simple to determine if they were on an emergency run.  Are their emergency lights on in the picture?  If not, then its incredibly dangerous for any vehicle to run a red light.  In fact, I would argue that if it's lights aren't on, but the vehicle was on an emergency run, that an investigation should take place to ensure that there was good reason for the lights not to be on.

It is funny that you should post this today. Last night I was on my home at around 8:00ish and stopped at a red light next to a police car. After 2 seconds their emergency lights went on and they hightailed it through the red light and pulled up in front of Jimmy Johns Subs and went inside.

Well that just also happened to be where I was headed!I thought "Oh no there must be an emergency, should I risk it all for a #6 Sub?" Of course.

It turns out that the officers were not responding to an emergency call they were just very hungry and stopped to get some dinner.

Well don't be silly. That sounds like a life or death emergency to me. Haven't you ever heard of someone dying of hunger?
