Jessica McBride has apparently thought it through... which doesn't mean much I guess:
I admit that at first blush I thought this proposal - to send the National Guard into Milwaukee this summer - was an overreaction. Then I thought it through. We have a community in disorder. The National Guard would help restore needed order and would send a strong message to the criminal element this summer.
No. No. Hell no.
The military is not an acceptable police force. I find how we treat policing and the military in this country to be ludicrous. We treat our military more and more like police, and our police more and more like the military. They are not the same thing dammit. We weaken our military abroad, while we have our police acting more like the military against our own citizens. Now we want to actually just skip the military and bring the military to bear? The military is for fighting the enemy abroad, and the police are there to protect and serve the citizenry... and never shall the twain meet.
Honestly... what do you expect them to do? Should they set up road blocks and checkpoints at the entrances to the suburbs? And what should they do if they see something suspicious... take aim and fire? They are soldiers, and not a trained police who are supposed to respect the constitutional rights of citizens.
Oh right... the Constitution... haven't forgotten that have you? Despite what some may say, this is not a state of emergency. There isn't rioting and looting on the street and general chaos. As Jessica has been fond of saying of late... this isn't Compton folks... and even they don't pull in the National Guard.
So take a deep cleansing breath already.
