The Bomb Shelter Church

Central United Methodist ChurchIt's one of the ugliest churches I've seen... ever.  I discount any of the "shop corner" churches you tend to see popping up in the inner city, because for the most part, they weren't built to be churches.  Central United Methodist Church on 25th and Wisconsin Ave. was actually built on purpose this way as a church.  Honestly.

What's worse, is they tore down an existing old church to build this one.  I tried in vain to find pictures of the old Wesley Methodist Church, which this replaced, but even the power of Google couldn't uncover one.

I tried to describe what this church looks like to a friend of mine, and was having a hard time.  All I could come up with was, "It looks like a big bomb shelter."  So I took my new camera over there today, and snapped some photos.  You can see them all in this Flickr set.

This is also part of my experimental photography project called Around Milwaukee.

Yep, that is one butt ugly church. Do Methodists excommunicate?
If not, they should make an exception for whoever designed
that puppy.

The first and last images are the important ones. They show
the cornerstone which was kept from the old church they tore
down. It should be noted that Central Methodist was formed in
1969 by the merger of the First Methodist Church and the Wesley
Methodist Church; the pictures you seek would be under one of
those names.

I tried searching for pictures of Wesley, with no success. Picturs of First Methodist wouldn't help, since that is what used to be called Grand Ave. Methodist Church, which used to be on 10th and Wisconsin, so is a different building.

Didn't I see that structure in Beneath the Planet of the Apes?

Where's the bomb and the people wearing masks?

Did you search for Spring Street Methodist? That's the name on
the big cornerstone set in that one wall. I had occasion to drive
by there today, altho if I had nothing better to do I could have
just walked.
