There is a lot of talk about the new movie, 300. I haven't seen it, but the title seems just wrong to me. It is about the Battle of Thermopylae, in which the Greeks battled the Persians. The Spartans had held off the Persians for two days very successfully, mostly due to the brilliance of the Greek generals in choosing the location of the battle, a small pass that negated the Persian's larger numbers. However, the Persians were able to outflank and encircle the Greeks when they found a mountain pass that was supposed to be covered by the Phocians, who had abandoned their guarding position. Before the encirclement was complete, the Greeks started a strategic withdrawal, and were then covered by 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians. They held off the Persians for as long as they could in an effort to allow the rest of the Greek forces to escape, and were eventually wiped out in an incredible act of bravery.
Yet the 700 Thespians never seem to get any credit. Many movies have been made about the battle, including this last one. Yet the 300 number seems to always dominate. The bravery of the Spartans is always highlighted, and the Thespians seems to have been left as a footnote to history buffs.
Frankly, they deserve better. Rename the movie to 1000 will yah?
