Alienating the Middle
It's alright for Ann Coulter to act like an idiot because the other side does it too.  That just about sums up the reaction by some on the right.  To be quite fair, many many on the right are condemning Ann and wishing she didn't garner so much attention.  Of course, the sad fact is that she does garner that much attention.  She was invited to CPAC in the first place after all.  Why?  It's not like this is the first time she's said something stupid and offensive.  And yet she is applauded by people when she speaks.

Why?  You hear it all.  When she does it, she's joking.  Which of course is exactly what liberals say in defense of their idiots when they speak.  The other favorite is that it's ok for Ann to do it, because liberals do it too.  Which is the excuse liberals give when their idiots speak.  It's simply turns into a chicken and egg argument.

I've said before that Ann Coulter is the garbage can of conservative thought, and this only reinforces it.  The problem is that she is popular with the die hard believers.  But what about those who you are trying to swing to your side?  Those are the people she turns off... and those are precisely the people you can least afford to alienate.  The diehards will always believe.  It's the folks on the fence that you need to worry about.

If all you care about is preaching to the choir, then for sure Ann Coulter is the perfect person to do it.  But if you want to encourage more people to join your side, then shut her up before it's too late.  No excuses.  Every time someone cries out about "the other side is mean too" only sounds like you're a 6 year old crying to mommy that the other person started it.  Is that who you want to be?

Sir, I was not one sitting on the fence. I was a life long
republican and disgusted by Ann. I have been since she first
arrived on the scene. She became the face of my party because
she was cheered for her vulgarities and given a public platform
time and time again. For years I've watched as my party and
it's values have been trashed by the likes of Ann and other
foul mouthed self appointed pundits. My party no longer
represents conservatism and family values..it's now big
government, wayward spending and verbal vomit. Due to all of
this garbage I have been forced to make a choice...and that
choice is a difficult one but for my own sake I must make it.
I am leaving the party. It's over. It's too late to now try
and disown what my party adopted as a figurehead. Goodbye.

Good for you. I "left" that party a long time ago, though to be honest I'm not sure whether I was really all that much of a member. Think about becoming a Libertarian... we're a good bunch, and always welcome a convert or two. However, we do have our crazies in the mix too. I think every party does.
