<< So You Think It's Easy? Adventures in English Translation >>
My Head May Explode After This

Yesterday I agreed with Jay Bullock, and now I'm about to agree with Jessica McBride.  God only knows who I'll agree with tomorrow:

So, in Wisconsin, we let people who are 18, 19, and 20 go to war and die for our country, get married, get a job, vote, and live on their own.

But now we might not let them go into a mall without their parent? A TWENTY YEAR OLD?

She is of course referring to this story about the new "plan" for Mayfair:

If you are under 30, don't be surprised if the new policy has you showing ID. If you are over the age of 21, you will have no trouble entering the mall, but if you are under the drinking age, you may have to be with an adult.

Mayfair is working on finding an exact age cut off. Shoppers who meet the age requirement will be given wristbands. If you are underage you must stay with an adult or parent.

All I can say, is that although I'm under 30, I'm now glad that I'm usually mistaken for someone over 30.  This country has a real problem with dealing with children in general.  Mostly it's a problem where adults and government continue to treat adults as children long after they've stopped being children.  You can drive when you're 16.  You can vote (without an ID mind you) at 18, along with getting married, signing a contract, and joining the military.  Of course, you can fight and die for your country, but you can't drink, and apparently now you can't go to a local shopping mall without mommy until you're 21.

Of course, if you commit a certain type of crime, and the DA wants run for re-election, then the government will have absolutely no problems sending a juvenile to adult court.  You're adult enough to get gang raped in prison, but not adult enough to go to the Gap without your mommy according to some.

With all the restrictions that we are placing on when you're an adult... what incentive is there for children to act like one?  Absolutely none.  And so kids keep acting like it long after they should've grown out of it, because they have no reason to, and we continue to humor them.

Make up your minds people.  If you're adult enough to vote and go to war, than you're adult enough to go to a mall on your own and pay the penalty if you misbehave (and drink for that matter).

A couple of points:

1.) Most people in America no longer grow up. Period.

2.) It's clear from accident statistics that 16 is way too young to drive responsibly. If anything, I'd like to see it raised considerably.

3.) The only reason they're talking about carding people up to 20 is because they can't card people because they're black. The unspoken goal is to be able to control the mall population of African-American males between the ages of 12 and 22ish. They can't do that legally or morally, so they're doing what they probable think is the next best thing and limiting everyone in those age groups.
