Who Do You Like For President?

I can't stand John McCain, Hillary is way too fugly, and nobody knows enough about Obama to say one way or another (which is why so many people like him).  Giuliani looks intriguing... but I have a feeling the bloom will come off that rose real quick once more of his liberal ideas come to light.  So Nick, who do you like for President in 2008?

He'll never win the Republican primary... but right now... Ron Paul is looking very good to me.  He's run previously as a Libertarian, and is currently representing Texas in the House as a Republican.  He has set up an exploratory committee, and as of last week, was performing very well in the Pajamas Media straw poll.  For some strange reason, they've decided to pull him off the poll though, and some are questioning why.

He's come to be called "Congressman No", not as an homage to the James Bond film (though he is a doctor), but rather because he votes no on most bills since he finds that Congress has no Constitutional authority to do most of what it does.  A man after my own heart.  He is anti-abortion, and hard on illegal immigration... check, check.  He is against the drug war... check... but also against the Iraq War... hmmmm.  He also thinks we should revert back to the gold standard.... riigghhht.  OK... so he's not perfect.  But what candidate is?  If I waited to vote for someone who matched my views exactly, I'd have to wait until I was 35 and could run myself.

He's got a snowball's chance in hell of winning, but at the very least, if he gains enough traction then he could help steer the debate to the right issues.  Here's another column with some more information as well.

Nick, thanks for writing about Dr. Paul and considering him for President. He needs a strong grassroots movement in order to spread the word about his ideas. Ron Paul has the same chance as any other candidate when it comes down to it. We just have to make it happen. Just because the media has had a habit of heavily influencing past elections does not mean it always must be that way.

There is no real dirt on Ron Paul. He is a threat to a lot of folks who fleece the government though, so he doesn't get the fair shot in the court of faux public opinion otherwise known as TV.
