Because I don't feel like necessarily blogging about anything in the news today, I've decided to examine what makes Republicans and Democrats tick, what makes them so similar, and why I'm not one. Really, it all boils down to being emotionally and intellectually secure in your beliefs and attitudes. In general, I believe that Republicans and Democrats are neither. This may sound harsh, but I'm afraid it's very true. The reason I believe this is simple... they try to write their beliefs into law and get everyone to do exactly what they do.
When examining many of the arguments around law in this country, I'm always amazed at how many of them center around making people do exactly what the law maker chooses to do with their life. In fact, many of the big scandals in politics have occurred when it was found that a law maker was being "hypocritical". Whether it was a gay legislator who voted against "gay rights" legislation or someone who believes in "traditional values" getting divorced, etc. But why should we care? People have this incredible need to be like everyone else. They believe in it so strongly, that they are willing to force everyone else to do exactly what they do through the rule of law. If they didn't try to pass that kind of legislation, there would be nothing to be hypocritical about.
Parents who think its a good idea to put their 7 year old in a booster seat weren't satisfied with making sure their child is safe. Now we have to make every parent do it. People who don't like to smoke don't want to seem like Goody Two Shoes, so we want to ban it everywhere. People who aren't gay aren't happy enough with not locking lips with a member of the same sex, they want to ban gay marriage. People who don't like to gamble try to ban gambling for everyone. People who hate drugs think its more appropriate to bust into dispensaries housing dying cancer patients using sub-machine guns.
In other words, they want people to live their lives just like they do. I suppose its not that shocking of an idea. They think they have a good life, so why wouldn't they want everyone to have it? The problem lies in that someone else thinks that the life they lead, which may be demonstrably different, is pretty good too. So why can't everyone live life like them? And so it becomes a competition to gain the approval of the majority. Who has the better life, and how can I make everyone else live it? They do it because at a subconscious level, they need the approval of the majority. If I can pass this law, then that means that their lifestyle choice is accepted.
And so I choose to be a Libertarian. I live my life the way I choose, and I could care less if you think its a good life or not. And if you don't want to live like me, then that's fine. Just don't make me live like you.
