<< The Consequences of Environmentalism I'm Touching Phelony Jones >>
I Have Faith In Other Things...

Look Patrick... I understand that you were trying to jab back and a jerk who emailed you, and were trying to clear up some facts... but that's no reason to jab at the rest of us:

A far better predictor than education is church attendance: Marriage as we know it won big among people who go to church and lost big among people who rarely or never go. Same with the Dem/GOP split for the House: People who don’t often go to church voted Democrat, people who do voted Republican.

Thus, people who have a normal human capacity for faith vote conservatively; those who find themselves lacking this vote Democrat.

So those who don't go to church regularly aren't normal, or are lacking something basic, and that's why they vote Democratic?  I'm no Democrat (although I voted for a couple last November), but I still think that's a pretty low blow.

Just because I don't go to church, or necessarily consider myself very religious any more (at least by your definition) doesn't mean that I don't have faith.  I cetainly don't think I'm lacking in the capacity for it.  Do I have faith in a Christian God?  Perhaps not.  I really don't know any more.  But this seems to strike at the heart of a larger discussion that occurs regarding faith and morality.

There are many out there, and I'm not saying you're one of them Patrick, who would suggest that people who aren't religious are incapable of moral behavior.  Whether they believe that morality only comes from faith and the love of God, or through some fear of everlasting damnation, these people exist.  Likewise, some people that our natural rights only come from the grace of God.  Without God they'd argue, none of our rights would exist.  I disagree with both points vehmently.

Likewise, I think church attendance is an awfully poor measure of one's ability to have faith.  I have faith in many things.  I have faith in family.  I have faith in my friends.  I have faith in the love from my family and friends.  In fact, I might argue that it's harder to have faith in people than in God.  God is perfect and loving of everyone... humans are neither.  If one were so inclined, one might even argue that people who have such absolute faith in God do so because they have an abhorrent lack of faith in people... you know... if one wanted to be argumentative.

So next time you decide to fight back against an emailer, try spreading a bit more faith, rather than mud, around will yah?

I agree that Patrick's comment was a little harsh.

But I do wonder where notions like "natural rights" and "human dignity" can come from except from God. Or if not the Christian God, some being equally hard to prove to people who don't want to believe it him/her/it.

As for Christianity and morality: I do think that Christian *societies* are more moral (and yes, I know all about the evils done in Christian societies).

But I think a consequence of this is that atheists in Christian societies tend to be moral too. They have accepted the consequences of Christian faith for behavior, without accepting that premise.

This I think the loss of Christian faith in a society has dire consequences. The existence of some atheists in Christian societies isn't news, and isn't a big deal.
