MPS wants to open up an all boys and an all girls school in September:
An all-boys schools and an all-girls school could open as part of the Milwaukee Public Schools system by September. In documents made available in advance of a School Board committee meeting Tuesday, MPS administrators said, "MPS strongly believes that parents should be given the opportunity to choose single-sex schools for their children if they believe that these schools will help their children."..."You need to look at every opportunity to give them a chance for success," he said. "If a change in school environment that will allow them to better focus on academics and get a chance to succeed academically is out there, I think it's incumbent upon the board to really investigate and create programs that will drive at that success."
What's interesting is that MPS is very focused on diversity in education. MPS lead the way when it came to desegregating schools through bus programs. So if it's so important to not have racial segregation, why is it OK to have sex segregation?
And if it were to be shown that both black and white kids learned better in completely equal, yet segregated schools, would it be OK to start segregating in order to give them the best chance at success?
I find the whole idea somewhat troubling myself, but that doesn't top the question from popping into my head. Discuss.
