I hadn't participated in the XTERRA the last two years because it came too close to another race in Pewaukee which I always did. But this year I had seriously considered ditching Pewaukee for XTERRA. I guess now I won't have the chance to:
The promoters of the XTERRA off-road triathlon sent a dispatch from their home base in Hawaii saying they won’t be back after a two-year fling on the lakefront....Despite brutal heat in 2005 and a nasty storm in 2006, the races drew more than 400 professional and amateur competitors from 35 states and eight countries. Well over half the participants were visitors who dropped some cash in local hotels and restaurants...."In the end, however, it came down to cost," Trey Garman, Team Unlimited's director of marketing wrote. "Milwaukee was our most expensive venue to operate and we couldn't afford to do it again this year.We do hope that we'll be able to return at a later time."A big part of the cost for TEAM Unlimited was the $10,000 the parks department charged for use of Veteran's Park, McKinley Beach and the Oak Leaf Trail."Most of the venues where we go, the municipality will either pay us a little bit or waive all park fees and user fees," Garman explained. "That doesn't happen in Milwaukee."
