JSOnline has the following news in Day Watch:
The state Department of Transportation is recommending raising the annual registration fees to $80 for cars, a 46% increase, and hikes of up to 65% for light trucks. The department also recommends hiking the cost of driver's licenses by $10, from $24 to $34, to cover the cost of new federal requirements to make identification cards more secure. The recommendations were due two months ago as part of the agency's budget request, but the department waited until Friday - three days after Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle was re-elected - to submit them.
Of course, has the DOT actually been on time with their recommendations, perhaps another issue would have made it into the Governor's debate. Oh... like perhaps the fact that Doyle raided the transportation fund, which is where these fees for road construction go. Without these hikes, those raided funds didn't really mean anything to the average tax payer. To them, it just seems like moving a little money around. But now that they'll be faced with the real consequences of that raid, in the form of higher user fees, maybe they would have felt different.
Of course, now we'll never know. How convenient for Doyle.
