A lot of stuff happened last night, and I think I only remember about half of it. I may have met someone who is somewhat important, and I think I talked intelligently... at least I hope. Any rumors you've heard of me scaring women, or challenging them to feats of strength are blatant lies, and there is no proof of any of it!
I'm trying to scan around the blogosphere right now, but my current news aggregator News Hutch is so inundated with traffic that it's not available. I'm trying to read about the returns on MSNBC and JSOnline... but... just... can't... do... it. It's not that I'm having a hard time accepting the results, it's that I can't stand the smug, arrogant, obviously pre-written commentary.
Since I can't read everyone else's commentary right now, I guess I'll have to give you all my own. So what do I think about the results? Here is my quick rundown:
Doyle vs Green: I'm not shocked at the outcome, but am surprised by the margin. I thought it could easily go either way, and that it would be a squeaker. Some will fault the election board... but that will only take you so far. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Mark Green let Doyle frame the debate, and the issues. He let himself get put on the ropes early, and it cost him.
Van Hollen vs Falk: I'm happy that it came out the way it did, but am also surprised by this margin. I didn't think it would be as close as it was. Many seem to be surprised that it wasn't more of a straight party line vote, but I give Wisconsin voters more credit than that. I think more voters sit in the middle and honestly look at each candidate separately than many people think.
Gay Marriage and Death: I'm not at all surprised at either of these results, though I am disappointed. What will be unbearable is the gloating by the "One Man and One Woman" crowd that is sure to come. Of all the groups supporting all the different candidates and causes, I think this group will be the most annoying in victory. That's right... more annoying than the Democrats after winning the house.
Congress: At this hour the Senate is still up for grabs, but its not looking good for the elephants. If the Republicans do manage to hold the Senate with the Democrats controlling the House, I will actually be quite happy. That will mean two years of government inaction and less spending, because they can't agree on what to spend it on. If the donkeys pick up the Senate too, then I'll look forward to Bush wielding his veto pen like an angry mo-fo, along with even more government inaction. The rest of the crap that Nancy Pelosi will pull as far as demand hearings about Iraq will purely be for show. Look forward to Bush fighting those hearings tooth and nail, and several law suits being filed in the Supreme Court by Pelosi when Bush refuses to give her certain documents.
Everything else is just an ego hit for me. The majority of people or issues I voted on lost. That is the cross that I bear for holding the uncommon combination values which I do.
