How I'm Voting: Tom Reynolds

This is number seven out of who knows how many posts that are explaining how I'm voting and why.  This time I'm discussing the race between incumbent Republican Tom Reynolds and challenging Democrat Jim Sullivan for State Senate.  I've decided to give my vote for Tom Reynolds, but will admit that this is actually a very strange race.

First of all, I find it strange that I can't actually find a campaign website for Tom Reynolds.  The one I linked to is actually his State Senate site.  Hell, even Jim Sensenbrenner has a campaign site, even though it looks like it was designed in 1992.  I won't exactly hold this against Tom, but it actually makes it hard to directly compare candidates, if I didn't already know something about him, and what he's done.

The strange aspect to this race has been the cross-over support that Jim Sullivan has received.  Actually, wherever I drive in Wauwatosa, I see a lot of Sullivan signs, even in yards with Green and Van Hollen signs.  This isn't exactly surprising though, given that he's on the Wauwatosa City Council.  You'd expect a lot of home town support for a candidate running for a state elected office.  Exactly what Tom Reynolds has done to bother so many Republicans though is still somewhat of a mystery to me.  It would seem that some are upset about his fighting against the incremental gas tax... but frankly I find that to be an good accomplishment, even if it was just a drop in the tax bucket.

Of course, one of Sullivan's "accomplishments" was leading the charge to ban smoking in restaurants in Wauwatosa.  While Elliot may find this encouraging, I find this deeply disturbing.  In general though, his campaign site is that of someone who says a lot by saying almost nothing.  Lots of slogans, and very few details.  Then I sent and looked at his endorsement list.

OK... Tom Reynolds it is.
