Let me see if I've got you straight Eugene:
Unlike the drunken comments of Mel Gibson, I think this is more a case of a public personality being a bit too candid with his thoughts to a reporter. I don't think Young is anti-Semitic or prejudiced against Koreans or Arabs but he should have qualified his comments.I know many African-Americans who do think that black businesses have been hurt by the presence of stores and markets run by people who are not African-American. It's part of a general perception that blacks simply don't get the same sort of opportunities from banks and other lending organizations to start their own shops.
So basically you're saying that the minorities are taking jobs and business away from the... minorities? And that this is racist? Are you suggesting that the white power brokers in the banking and lending industry aren't being preferential only to whites... but rather are only racist towards black people and not other minority group? Because that's how this sounds to me... which frankly... is really getting into the realm of conspiracy theories.
And in case you're wondering, the comments by Andrew Young that spawned Eugene's post was:
In the Sentinel interview, Young was asked about whether he was concerned Wal-Mart causes smaller, mom-and-pop stores to close."Well, I think they should; they ran the 'mom and pop' stores out of my neighborhood," the paper quoted Young as saying. "But you see, those are the people who have been overcharging us, selling us stale bread and bad meat and wilted vegetables. And they sold out and moved to Florida. I think they've ripped off our communities enough. First it was Jews, then it was Koreans and now it's Arabs; very few black people own these stores."
