A Question for TABOR Supporters

Why is the Milwaukee County Council's suggestion of a referendum a bad thing?

Supervisors trying to get a parks sales-tax referendum on the November ballot are vowing to apply citizen and peer pressure to Milwaukee County Board colleagues whose opposition may block the plan the board approved narrowly Thursday.

Launching a campaign to find three votes to override an expected veto of the referendum plan, Supervisor Gerry Broderick criticized five Parks Committee members for voting against holding an advisory-only referendum on a 0.5% tax for parks, recreation and culture.

Granted we don't have a Tax Payers Bill of Rights yet... but even though we don't... why is it a bad thing for government to ask us if we're willing to pay a new tax now?  I'm not saying I'd vote yes on the referendum... I'd definitely vote no... but I don't see the problem with being asked.  Is it because it's only advisory?  If it were a binding referendum, would that make a difference in your viewpoint?

And frankly, I think TABOR supporters should be careful not to come out against these types of referendums, since they are a key provision in any Tax Payers Bill of Rights.  The idea is that government would need to ask the people before enacting any new taxes.  If you always reflexively say no to even the thought of a referendum, you'll just be giving ammunition to those who oppose a Tax Payers Bill of Rights.
