A Goomba needs to be smashed in New York:

Whether the Planning Board has control over the content of signs was a hot topic at last week's meeting after plans were presented to name a pizzeria Goomba's.

While member Paul Puccio seemed to think the term simply means "my friend," member Joseph Visalli wasn't so sure, thinking the word could be a ethnic slur.

It might be an ethnic slur, but everyone is searching around to verify it... and in the mean time they're going to have lots of meetings to approve the possibly offensive sign using a word which nobody there quite knows the meaning of.  Your tax dollars at work.  Via Tongue Tied.
