I'm actually pretty "religious" about taking the stairs at work. I work on the fourth floor of the building, so its a nice added workout every day as I go to meetings and to the cafeteria on different floors. Not only that, but even though there are four elevators for the building, and its only five stories tall, they seem to take forever. But just now, I had my hands full, and didn't want to deal with opening and closing stairwell doors, so I took the elevator from the second to the fourth floor.
As I was waiting for my elevator to arrive, a different elevator showed up that was going down. To signal the event, a red light next to the elevator lit up. When my elevator came going up, a white light lit up. Going down is red, while going up is white? It struck me as really tying very closely into Christianity where Hell is the place below where people burn (red), while Heaven is above and you are surrounded by God's light (white). But is that really a concept that is universally accepted by people, enough to use it as a signal for an elevator? If your goal is to make the signalling most usable, wouldn't arrow shaped lights make more sense?
Right now in our building, when we don't have enough room on the rest of the floors for new people, they get tossed into a room in the basement with lots of cramped desks called "The Corral", or sometimes "The Dungeon". Maybe we should call it "Hell" instead. Well, I'm sure the people working there already do.
