The Wauwatosa School Board voted Monday night to retain East High School's Red Raiders nickname but change the school logo of a spear or arrow and work to create a new design. The vote came after 2 1/2 hours of discussion among board members and those in the audience divided over whether to keep or scrap the nickname.
East Principal Bill Stroud made the recommendation to keep the name but change the logo to a new one created by students and alumni. He also recommended removing the American-Indian "Tommy Raider" caricature in the Raider Room and replacing the logo on athletic apparel.Stroud further suggested a review of the school curriculum regarding diversity and that the school invite an American Indian to speak at classes."We have a teachable moment, and we can do that without throwing away the name and move forward with teaching diversity," Ertl said.
