Putin: We Told U.S. Saddam Was Planning Attacks (emphasis added):

Russia gave the Bush administration intelligence after the September 11 attacks that suggested Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq was preparing attacks in the United States, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

"After Sept. 11, 2001, and before the start of the military operation in Iraq, the Russian special services, the intelligence service, received information that officials from Saddam's regime were preparing terrorist attacks in the United States and outside it against the U.S. military and other interests," Putin said.

Putin said the intelligence didn't cause Russia to waver from its firm opposition to the war.

I'm really curious to see what this intelligence could have been... and how strong it was. But here are the thoughts that immediately popped into my head when I read this:

1. Maybe this will shut up the people who said that we shouldn't have gone to war because Saddam was no threat to the U.S. Personally I thought this was a bogus idea anyway since he was a murderous thug who killed and maimed thousands of his own people, and invaded several of his neighbors.
   
2. Let me get this straight. Russia is now one of our "ally" but when they find out we could be under immediate attack, they don't support our trying to prevent it? I mean its great they gave us the intelligence and all, but is that really enough? The least they could have done was support our decision to oust someone who was trying to attack our country, especially since they had the intimate knowledge of the attack!
   

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the media.

If we had not gone into Iraq, and there had been another terrorist attack on our soil, and this information then became public, the Democrats really would have an argument for Bush's impeachment.
